Every second counts in the job of a firefighter, and all of them take it upon themselves to assist and save the
lives of those caught up in disasters, working 24 hours on stand-by. Added to this is the hero-status granted
to the rescuers by the public, which puts them under a lot of psychological pressure that most people cannot
appreciate. However, because of the special characteristics of the job, they are prone to suffering from post-
traumatic stress disorder when under the pressure of conducting disaster relief in the long-term. This has
especially been the case with the Penghu TransAsia Airways plane crash, and the recent TransAsia Airways
crash in the Nangang district of Taipei, the July 31st Kaohsiung Sinopec gas explosion, the Taoyuan bowling
alley fire and other major disasters. It is not just the firefighters involved in disaster relief that may suffer
from PTSD, but also any workers who take part in the rapidly changing disaster scene.
