In recent years, Taiwanese have frequently traveled to Hong Kong and Macao for sightseeing,
education, employment, or business. In order to maintain our physical and mental health, and
insure the property security, we should understand the geographical and climatic characteristics of
these two regions, and their cultural, historical, social and economic backgrounds.
Typhoons are not unique to Taiwan. Instead, they also develop above other tropical oceans,
just with different terms, such as “Typhoon” in the Pacific Northwest (PNW), “Hurricane” in the
Atlantic Ocean and the Eastern Pacific, and “Cyclone” in the Indian Ocean. In the Philippines,
people call them “Baguio”, while in Australia “Willy-Willy” (Figure 1).
