Since Tainan City and Tainan County merged in 2010, it now contains 37 administrative regions and a
population of 1.88 million. Still, characteristics vary greatly from region to region. Also, new types and
scales of disasters are increasing in recent years. These all lead to more casualties of firefighters and
civilians. For example, the gas explosions in Kaohsiung in 2014, the fire at the bowling alley in Xinwu
District of Taoyuan in 2015, the fire at the Jingpeng factory in Pingzhen District of Taoyuan in 2018,
the fire at the metal house in Daya District of Taichung City in 2019, and even the Meinong earthquake
at 3:58 a.m. on February 6, 2016 and the collapse of the Weiguan apartment complex in Tainan City Firefighters on the Scene
due to a devastating earthquake on February 6, 2016, which caused 115 deaths. In the face of such
disasters—no matter when and where—a firefighter’s missions are: to save lives, to reduce people’s
property losses and to ensure their own safety in an emergency.
