On 17th December 2008, the medical equipment depot of operating room in National
Taiwan University Hospital was on fire at 7:22pm. Based on the fire service regulations,
the hospital chose not to set up the sprinkler head, therefore it missed out the opportunity
to extinguish the fire at the first moment. The fire spread so swiftly that it killed one
patient, and 6 doctors and 5 nurses suffered smoke inhalation injury. This case has made
the fire safety in operating rooms gain more serious concern, and it is time to reconsider
that: the commonly used dry chemical fire extinguisher and indoor hydrant are really
the only choices available for medical personnel when there is a fire? In this article, we
will discuss whether it is appropriate to set up automatic fire extinguishing appliance in
an operating room, and which fire extinguishing appliance properly meets its functional
goals and needs.
