Consecutive days of heavy rain in
southern Taiwan in August 2021 brought
about mudslides in Kaohsiung City,
resulting in the destruction of the Mingba
Kelu Bridge due to upstream flooding.

The bridge, located in Kaohsiung City's
Taoyuan District, was part of the South Cross Island Highway. On August 11, representatives and
their entourage from the Taoyuan District Office set off from the Qinhe tribe in the afternoon to
visit three tribes that were trapped in the mountains due to the mudslide. As they were traveling
back to the Qinhe tribe, they were swept away by a sudden flood. Upon learning about the incident,
the Kaohsiung City Government Fire Bureau formed a search and rescue team to carry out a
rescue mission without delay. On August 12, a sudden mudslide along the Yusui River swept three
firefighters away to the site of the broken bridge. The firefighters could not retreat in time and had
to stay on the other side of the broken bridge. On August 13, another mudslide occurred. This time,
the command tent and various equipment were buried in the mudslide before they could be taken
away. Fortunately, there was no casualty among the rescue personnel.
