In Taiwan, it has been 10 years since the first Annual Top 10 Outstanding
EMTs award was held in 2007. In the decade, the Emergency Medical Services
(EMS) in Taiwan had developed rapidly and those “inexperienced” EMTs from fire
departments, who worked with medical instructors from Society of Emergency
Medicine, play a significant role in emergency care out of hospital in all cities
and counties nowadays. Though emergency care cases tend to increase every
year, people in Taiwan still receive excellent service quality and are granted
higher survival rate. It is an era we all feel proud of: the EMTs had done the right
thing at the right time, and just in the right place. In some cities and counties,
the EMTS could even send the patients to the right hospitals. However, we will
never feel self-satisfied and stop the pursuit of excellence. In the years to come,
what initiatives the candidate has taken to promote the EMS in his/her city or
county will be adopted into the selection standards of Top 10 Outstanding EMTs,
in addition to current criteria. Medical instructors hope that, in the near future,
those outstanding EMTs could strengthen their leading ability, bring up more
creative ideas, enhance the innovation, enable the integration between different
departments with resources available now, and become the cornerstone to
support EMS development and then improve the emergency care quality in all the
cities and counties.
